Scientists Lose Contact with Loggerhead Turtle, Sodade
A recent press release by scientists working with Seaturtle.org has revealed the loss of Sodade, one of the loggerhead turtles tagged in their satellite tracking study.
Dr. Brendan Godley, NERC Research Fellow with the Marine Turtle Research Group of the University of Exeter in Cornwall, UK reported the news in the press release:
"Sodade returned to nest on the night of the 14th August and then returned to the interesting habitat. After a few days we started to receive a large number of high quality locations from the transmitter as it headed west. After two days transmission stopped. The locations were too frequent and of too high a quality to have been from a turtle in the water. We think that she was captured by one of three fishing boats which were working the area very close to shore and could be seen by the local team. It seems we have lost one of our turtles. We are using the loss of Sodade to highlight the problems facing turtles in the Cape Verde Islands in the media. Hopefully her loss will, not be in vain." ~ Seaturtle.org
The study, aimed to monitor the migration patterns of loggerhead turtles, tracks the tagged animals and displays the latest data at their seaturtle.org website.
