Tumbling Ants Free-Fall to Safety

Wednesday February 9, 2005
Researchers from the University of Florida have discovered that ants belonging to the species Cephalotes atratus are able to glide their way to safety if they fall from the trees they inhabit. Their study showed that, when dislodged from their home tree, the ants curve their backs so the fall in an arch towards the trunk instead of straight down to the ground. By landing on the trunk, the ants increase their chances of being reunited with their colony.
