Ancient DNA Explains Penguin Micro-Evolution

Thursday November 10, 2005
The fossilized bones of Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) that lived six thousand years ago have provided insight into the micro-evolution of the species.

Researchers studying the fossil bones suggest that present day penguins differ genetically from their ancestors. These genetic differences are thought to have been caused by changes in breeding colony structure, as the penguins moved breeding grounds in response to the formation of mega-iceburgs.
