Bird Flu Evident in Wild Birds in Europe

Saturday February 18, 2006
The RSPB recently reported the spread of the deadly strain of bird flu in Europe:
"In the last seven days, Highly Pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza has been found in dead mute swans in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Iran, Austria and Germany. Tests are currently under way on samples from dead mute swans in Hungary, northern France, Poland and Denmark." ~ RSPB

Experts suggest the recent westward spread of the disease to be the result of harsh weather conditions in the Black Sea region, where the disease has been present since Octobeer 2005. Experts believe that birds migrating away from the region to avoid the harsh weather could have spread the disease in Europe.
