A Closer Look at Fruit
Thursday August 28, 2008
The BBC has a wonderful collection of close-up images of fruit—black mullberry, jackfruit, strawberry, common fig, kumquat, Japanese wineberry, and many others. The images—captured by plant experts from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew—reveal some of the adaptations plants have developed that enhance seed dispersal. Such adaptations include microscopic hooks and spines, lids that open and release seeds, and wings for wind dispersal. The slideshow is narrated by seed morphologist Wolfgang Stuppy from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The images are part of a larger project studying seeds, conducted by the Millenium Seed Bank Project and described in the book Seeds: Time Capsules of Life.
