Quiz - Six Basic Animal Groups

Sunday December 7, 2008

I thought it would be nice to start the week with an animal identification quiz. The quiz focuses on placing animals into one of six fundamental groups of animals: amphibians, birds, fishes, invertebrates, mammals, or reptiles. Although many people enjoy identifying animals down to their exact species, it is equally important to be able to sort organisms into their basic groups, even if you don't know exactly what family, genus, or species the animal belongs to.

Scientists estimate that there may be between 3 and 30 million species of animals on our planet. The exact number of species on Earth remains unknown, and new species are discovered all the time. If you're just starting to learn about animals and wildlife, it would be an overwhelming task to try and memorize species, one by one. A solid understanding of the basic animal groups can provide you with solid foundation for identifying animals.
