The second of the four teleost fish groups, the Elopomorpha, includes about 650 species. They vary widely in their physical appearance. Some are fast-swimming torpedo-shaped fish such as tarpons while others are long and slender-bodied, such as the eels. All members of this group possess a strange larva stage called a leptocephalus which migrate long distances before maturing.
