Scientists have discoverd that house cats and wild cats such as cheetahs and tigers share a handful of genes controlling coat pattern and color. Mutations in those genes produce similar patterns of spots and tabby patterns in wild and domestic cats.

Specifically, scientists identified a gene that controls the tabby pattern in domestic cats. They also analyzed 31 other felid species and discoverd that the same gene was responsible for the king cheetah coat variation.
