Remaining Four Dolphins Rescued from Katrina's Aftermath

Tuesday September 20, 2005
Eight bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were washed into Mississippi Sound during Hurricane Katrina. Earlier this month, a team of NOAA marine biologists and aquarium scientists located the stranded dolphins and were able to recapture four of the dolphins.

The remaining four dolphins were lost for several days until NOAA Fisheries Service scientists located them again near Biloxi Mississippi. The dolphins were later rescued in an effort that involved the U.S. Navy, the Air National Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Gulf World Marine Park, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.
