The Value of Insect Labor

Insects play a vital role in many natural processes. They pollinate plants, process waste, provide a food source for other animals, and even regulate populations of pests.

Insects are small and often seem to be in abundance, yet some vital species such as the North American bumble bee are in drastic decline. Their disappearance could spell disaster for entire ecosystems.

In a recent study aimed at raising public awareness of the importance of insect conservation, researchers estimated the value of the work performed by bees and other insects. Based on conservative assumptions, insects perform $57 billion worth of services in the United States alone.
