Definition: Net primary production (NPP) is the total energy (or nutrients) accumulated by an ecological unit of interest (such as an organism, a population, or an entire community). The net primary production is the difference between the gross primary production and respiration, as represented by the following equation:

NPP = gross primary production - respiration
