Create Your Own Naturalist's Laboratory

By Laura Klappenbach, About.com

In this project, you'll find out how important it is to create a separate space in your home for the study of animals and wildlife. Even if it is simply a corner of one room, by setting aside a special area where you can set up the materials you use to study animals and wildlife, you give your hobby a special place in your day-to-day life.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 2 - 4 hours

Here's How:

  1. Decide the location of your laboratory. Select a spare room or section of the basement. Find a place where you can work undisturbed.
  2. Collect your basic equipment: a desk, a file cabinet, a small bookshelf, a lamp, a notebook or computer, magnifying lenses, and any tools that you might use.
  3. Organize your equipment. Label drawers containing supplies, sort books as needed, either by subject or alphabetically, and place them on your shelf.
  4. When it comes time to review field notes, sort photographs, and catelog findings, make it a habit that you do these things in your new laboratory.

What You Need:

  • desk, chair and lamp
  • notebook or computer
  • filing cabinet or crate
  • small bookshelf
  • reference books
  • photo box or album
  • magnifying glass
  • forcepts or tweezers
  • microscope
  • storage containers
