Please read these guidelines carefully so you know what to do and what to expect when you submit your photos.

One of the most rewarding ways to enjoy animals, wildlife, and nature is through the art of photography. And one of the best ways to enjoy photography is by sharing your work with others.

If you're an amateur wildlife photographer and would like to share your images with the About.com community, you can submit your images by following a few simple steps. If you're looking for inspiration, you can stop by the Readers Wildife Photo Galleries page to see images other readers have submitted.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 15 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Verify that you are submitting eligible photos: Please submit only photos you have taken and for which you hold the copyright. Photos must be of wild animals in their natural habitat (sorry, no pet pictures).
  2. Submit your photo by email: Attach your photograph to an email. Type the following text in the subject line of your email: wildlife photograph submission. Send the email to: animals.guide@about.com. Submit as many photographs as you want, but you may need to attach large files to multiple emails (depending on the limits of your email server).
  3. What to expect after you submit your photos: The photo album is updated approximately once a quarter and photos are often added in batches. Due to the large number of photos I receive (and the limited time I have to process them) your submission may take a few weeks to appear in the album. You'll receive an email from me when your photos are published that includes links to your photographs for your records.

Tips:

  1. I only publish photos of wild animals in their natural habitat at my guidesite. Please do not submit photos of domestic animals or pets.
  2. Submit as many photographs as you want, but if files sizes are large, submit them via multiple emails.
  3. By submitting photographs to About, you are granting About.com Inc. permission to publish the image on the Animals / Wildlife website as well as other pages that display Animals / Wildlife content such as the About.com home page, the Education channel page, and newsletters. Your photograph will be added to the gallery, Readers' Wildife Photo Gallery - 2008, and may also be used to illustrate animal profiles or articles at the site.
  4. Every time your photograph is displayed on the site, whether it be in the gallery or in profiles/articles, it will be displayed with the following caption to identify you as the sole copyright owner: Photo © [your name or nick-name]
  5. After you have contributed at least 12 images to the Readers' Photo Album, you will be eligible to have your work featured in your own wildlife photographer portfolio.

What You Need:

  • Camera (digital or film)
  • Digital storage media or film (depending on camera type)
  • Computer to which you can transfer image (via upload or scan)
  • Scanner (if you intend to scan a print)
  • Email account and internet access
