Notes:

1. The numbers shown in parentheses next to each animal group indicate the number of endangered animals in that taxonomic group.

2. The US Endangered Species Act (ESA) was established in 1973 to protect endangered and threatened species and the ecosystems on which they depend. The ESA is administered jointly by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Department.

3. To be protected under the ESA, species undergo an evaluation known as the Endangered Species Petition Process. If at the end of that process a species is deemed to be endangered, it is added to the Endangered Species List.
