Endangered Species Directory - By State

A Directory to Threatened and Endangered Animals in the US
By Laura Klappenbach, About.com

Sort By: Animal Group | State

To view a listing of threatened or endangered animals that are protected under the Endangered Species Act for a specific state, select the appropriate state name from the drop-down box:

Notes:

1. The numbers shown in parentheses next to each state indicate the number of endangered animals in that state.

2. Some species (especially migratory species) are listed as threatened or endangered in more than one state. For example, the whooping crane is listed as endangered in several states.

3. The US Endangered Species Act (ESA) was established in 1973 to protect endangered and threatened species and the ecosystems on which they depend. The ESA is administered jointly by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Department.

4. To be protected under the ESA, species undergo an evaluation known as the Endangered Species Petition Process. If at the end of that process a species is deemed to be endangered, it is added to the Endangered Species List.

5. Many states also have state-level endangered species lists which include different species than those listed at the federal level under the ESA.
