Air Sac

By Laura Klappenbach, About.com

Definition: n. A structure unique to the respiratory system of birds. Air sacs are thin-walled structures and through which air flows as the bird breathes. Air sacs enable air to flow in one direction through the bird's respiratory system and ensures that newly inhaled air is not mixed with air that is to be exhaled. (Source: Sibley)
