Countershading

By Laura Klappenbach, About.com

Definition: n. A coloration pattern in the plumage of some birds in which the underparts of a bird are light in color while the upper parts of the bird are darker. This coloration helps to provide the bird with camouflage and helps conceal the outline of the bird. (Source: Sibley)
