Discoveries

We still have much to learn about animals and wildlife. Every day scientists learn more how animals live, compete, interact, and adapt. New species are discovered, fossils are found that give us better information about evolution, and conservationists achieve much towards protecting the future of animal life.

Hornbills Recognize Warning Calls of Monkeys
Hornbills and Diana monkeys warn each other of approaching predators, scientists have found. Experts from the University of St Andrews recently completed an 18-month study that took them to the tropical forests of West Africa where they recorded various monkey and bird warning calls and observed how hornbills and Diana monkeys respond to each others' calls.
Lobster's Unique Sounds Defy Predators
Scientists now understand more about the unique way spiny lobsters create sound to ward off predators. Using a method of sound production resembling that of stringed instruments, spiny lobsters startle attackers by emitting loud, raspy noises.
New Order of Insects Identified
A new order of insects, christened Mantophasmatodea, was discovered by researchers Oliver Zompro, Niels Peder Kristensen, and Klaus-Dieter Klass. This new order currently includes several formerly-unidentified specimens that date back to 1909.
Of Dolphins and Dinoflagellates
A clever technique that exploits "glow-in-the-dark" marine microorganisms now enables scientists to visualize how water flows over the surfaces of dolphins as they swim. The luminous patterns observed by researchers might lend insights into some of the unique adaptations dolphins have evolved to survive in their marine environment.
