The Galapagos penguin is the only species of penguin that lives north of the equator. It is endemic to the Galapagos Islands and is classified as endangered because of its small range, low numbers, and declining population. The Galapagos penguin takes advantage of the cool waters of the Humboldt and Cromwell Currents that surround the Galapagos. Galapagos penguins are found in greatest numbers on the islands of Fernandina and Isabelai.
