The East Pacific red octopus (Octopus rubescens) is a species of octopus that inhabits the coastal waters of the eastern Pacific, along the west coast of North America. It is bottom-dwelling species that lives in habitats that range from the shallow intertidal zone to waters of depths up to about 900 feet. The East Pacific red octopus can change its color and pattern readily, enabling it to blend into surrounding seascapes and avoid detection by predators and prey.
