How Is a Rare Species Added to the Endangered Species List?

By Laura Klappenbach, About.com

Question: How Is a Rare Species Added to the Endangered Species List?

Answer: There is a process called the Endangered Species Petition Process that must be followed in order to add a species to the list of threatened and endangered species. This process is made up of a series of steps that the US Fish & Wildlife Service, NOAA Fisheries, and conservationists follow in order to evaluate whether or not a species should be added to the list of threatened or endangered species.

Once the steps have been followed and, if appropriate, the species has been added to the Threatened and Endangered Species List, it then receives protection under the US Endangered Species Act.
