Polar Bear Listing

The US Fish and Wildlife Service announced in 2006 that they would consider whether to place the Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) on the list of species protected under the US Endangered Species Act. Yet the listing has been controversial and the US Government notoriously slow to come to a decision.

The proposal comes almost two years after the Center for Biological Diversity petitioned the US Government to consider the Polar Bear for protection.
