Taxonomic Classification

By Laura Klappenbach, About.com

Definition: n. "Hierarchical system for grouping and naming types of living organisms. The highest-level is the kingdom, which is typically broken down into subgroups called divisions (for plants) and phyla (for animals). Phyla are divided into classes (barids are in the class Aves) and then into orders. Orders are subdivided into families. Within families, birds are grouped at other taxonomic levels, given here in sequence from larger groupings to smaller: subfamily, tribe, genus, superspecies, species, and subspecies (race)."
