Woodpeckers and Relatives - Order PiciformesWoodpeckers and their relatives (Order Piciformes) include woodpeckers, toucans, barbets, honeyguides, wrynecks, and piculets. There are approximately 67 genera, 6 families, and 400 species of piciformes. Woodpeckers and their relatives are usually arboreal and nest in cavities. Piciformes feed on fruit, insects, or beeswax (though diet varies from species to species).

Scientists confirmed the rediscovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker, last sighted in 1944 and since thought to be extinct. With a wingspan of up to 3 feet, the ivory-billed woodpecker is among the worlds largest woodpeckers. |
